Behind the Roast: Colombian Coffee at Ottawa Valley Roast House

Behind the Roast: Colombian Coffee at Ottawa Valley Roast House

At Ottawa Valley Roast House, the coffees we choose are never random. Each origin, roast, and blend is selected to reflect how we live, brew, and enjoy coffee — often inspired by the outdoors and everyday rituals of the Ottawa Valley.

Two of our most loved blends, Paddler’s Portage and Algonquin Campfire, both begin their journey in Colombia’s Huila region.

Why Colombia Matters to Our Roasts

Colombia has long been known for producing clean, balanced, and approachable coffees, and the Huila region in southern Colombia stands out for its consistency and quality. Grown at elevations between 1600–1800 metres, coffee from this region develops slowly, allowing flavours to become more expressive and layered.

This elevation and climate make Colombian coffee a natural fit for the smooth, comforting profiles we aim for in our blends.

The Coffee Behind Paddler’s Portage & Algonquin Campfire

The Colombian coffee used in Paddler’s Portage and Algonquin Campfire is an organic lot from Huila, made up of Caturra, Colombia, and Castillo varietals.

This coffee is:

  • Washed with special sorting to ensure consistency

  • Sun dried on patios, then finished in mechanical dryers

  • Carefully processed to preserve clarity and sweetness

The result is a clean, dependable coffee that forms a strong foundation for both blends.

What This Colombian Coffee Brings to the Cup

In both Paddler’s Portage and Algonquin Campfire, the Colombian component delivers balance and structure.

You’ll notice:

  • A clean, smooth cup

  • Pleasing acidity that feels bright but not sharp

  • Notes of stone fruit and red berries

  • Brown sugar sweetness

  • A gentle citrus finish

These characteristics allow the coffee to remain approachable while still offering depth — perfect for both seasoned coffee drinkers and those just beginning their specialty coffee journey.

How It Shapes Each Blend

While both blends share Colombian roots, they express them differently.

Paddler’s Portage leans into the clean, smooth side of Colombian coffee — easy drinking, balanced, and reliable. It’s the kind of coffee you reach for before an early start or pack along for a quiet morning outdoors.

Algonquin Campfire builds on that same Colombian foundation but takes it in a slightly deeper, more comforting direction. The sweetness and structure from Huila help anchor the blend, creating a fuller, richer cup that still finishes clean.

Roasted with Intention

At Ottawa Valley Roast House, we roast our Colombian coffees to highlight their natural sweetness and clarity. We aim for roasts that feel familiar and comforting, without masking the origin’s character.

Both Paddler’s Portage and Algonquin Campfire are roasted to work across multiple brew methods — whether you prefer a drip machine at home, a French press at camp, or a slower pour-over ritual.

From Colombia to the Ottawa Valley

Every time you brew one of these blends, you’re tasting more than just coffee. You’re tasting the hills of southern Colombia, the care taken during processing, and the intention behind how we roast here in the Ottawa Valley.

That connection — from origin to cup — is what sits behind every roast we create
