Wanderlust: Exploring Ethiopia’s Yirgacheffe Konga

Some coffees invite you to slow down. Others make you curious. Wanderlust does both.

Sourced from the high elevations of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone in the Yirgacheffe region, this coffee is a celebration of place, people, and precision. Grown between 2000–2300 metres, Wanderlust comes from one of the most renowned coffee-producing areas in the world—an origin known for producing cups that are layered, expressive, and unmistakably Ethiopian.

The Origin: Yirgacheffe Konga, Ethiopia

Yirgacheffe coffees are famous for their clarity and complexity, and the Konga area is no exception. At these extreme elevations, coffee cherries mature slowly, allowing sugars to fully develop. The result is concentrated sweetness, vibrant acidity, and nuanced flavour.

This lot is classified as Grade 2 Washed, Extra Sort, made up of Heirloom Yirgacheffe varietals—a diverse mix of indigenous coffee plants that give Ethiopian coffees their depth and individuality.

Meticulous Processing, Start to Finish

Wanderlust is fully washed, a process that highlights brightness and clarity in the cup. After harvesting, cherries are carefully pulped, fermented, and washed before being sun-dried on raised beds. The coffee is then hand sorted, ensuring only the highest-quality beans make it through.

This attention to detail is carried out by the Konga Cooperative, one of several cooperatives that belong to the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). With over 2,400 smallholder farmers, the cooperative is known for its commitment to quality, transparency, and consistency—values that align closely with how we approach coffee at Ottawa Valley Roast House.

The Cup: Elegant, Juicy, and Complex

Wanderlust is refined without being delicate. It’s a coffee that rewards attention while remaining incredibly approachable.

Cup Profile:

  • Pleasing, lively acidity

  • Great natural sweetness

  • Notes of honey, stone fruit, and black tea

  • A big, juicy body

  • Finished with jasmine and lemon undertones

This is a coffee that evolves as it cools, revealing new layers with every sip.
